mrc4nl
Hi everyone, I'm mrc4nl, 20 years old and this will be my first decent scratchbuild.i've made a wooden case before, it did suit my needs, made it look special. though the build quality was low, and the case was very impractical to use.i have this case for almost 2 years now, and more and more i was upset by the limitations: after i saw the pictures of L3p's desk, i made my choise: i wanted to build a desk.the basics will be the same, but i didn't want to copy the whole desk, instead i wanted to implement my vision, and suit it to my needs: to store objects inside, rather then the mess around my desk, like it is now: i study mechanical engineering, so i use CAD to make a model. after a few models, i created the final one in Solidworks. every panel as a part. there will be plenty of storage space: 6 drawers, 3 on each side. on top of them there will be a metal "case". i haven't figured out the interior of the metal case, that will come eventually. what i can say is there will be water cooling note: the colors are random picked, the real one will be different thats all for now
mrc4nl
the first update one of the first things that had to me made are the curved fronts, here i have a picture: it will be made from 2 lage square layers of (bend)plywood glued together, and then cut to size. in order to make such thing, i had to make a a mold(?) first. i will create one "master model" to mill multiple sheets to the correct radius, the second reason is that i cant do it without. if i use a guide with a fixed radius to mill the wood and go beyond the the point where the radius is smaller i wound cut necessarily material (1) if i mill 2) it would't harm first things first, i needed a guide for the milling machine, unfortunately most wood planks/sheets are 2,25 meter and i needed 2.5Meter. 2 planks combined did the job: everything secured in place: i need to cut in stage, stage 1 after stage 2, and stage 3: now i need to mill the smaller radius on the edges finished: now i could start milling the sheets required for the mold: 1 and 2 are done, so one 1 still left finished: i only use 1/2 of them, now i have 6x shape instead of 3 i cut one side so all the shapes have equal distance: created notches for the clams and fastened it to a base plate a small test+ to preform the wood a litte bit:
mrc4nl
2nd update it about time to bend and glue the wood. 1. make sure everything is quickly accessible, because the glue dries quickly now i can start spreading the glue over the sheet of wood: done i lay the 2 sheet on top of each other and inserted it the glue did set over night, resulting in the correct shape these parts will not be painted, but instead covererd whith HPL (high presure laminate) like most furniture cutting it to size, its a litte larger than the workpiece, so i can trim the unwanted edges later to glue the hpl i use contact glue, its commonly used fot this application, apply both parts u want to glue, let the glue set for 15 minutes and than lay the hpl on the workpiece. here we have the contact glue the sheet of hpl turned upside down after applying glue and the workpiece secured into place trimming the edges
