SotosLg Posted December 5, 2022 Share Posted December 5, 2022 Good evening ladies and gentlemen!It's been quite a while since i last made a case mod.So, now it's time to make a military grade case mod (for a client which is fully provided by him) applying some ip67 components into it.Some of the tools and stuff are the following Using a technique of mine, i'll apply blue cammo.Something like this The victim will be a Pelikan storm case. The whole consept is about anti-vibration and waterproofing (as much as i can)The computer is fitted in a mini-ITX case from Coolermaster, and will be inside the case!(more of this, in the following days!)By looking at the outlet, it's best advised, to make a plate for the back of it so the screws can be mounted properly and not leaving the outlet on a thin piece of plastic.The plate is made by a 3mm acrylicMeasured and cutted by hand using dremelIt's not quite perfect because i didn't have much time left to file it down, so, here it is! SotosLg Posted December 5, 2022 Author Share Posted December 5, 2022 Not much done today, so i moved on to making the hole, so the backside of the outlet can fit properly on the plateMeasuring accordingly, i did the circle using a plastic bottle cap!It was just right as i needed it to be! Using my dremel, i did the cut Not perfectly done, though i could have used the motosaw, but it was already cutted....sigh Next, i had to do a bit of filing After that, i realized, that the outlet had a small notch, so i had to adjust the acrylic plate Some test fitting Late night OCD filling adjustments That is all for today!Might as well tomorrow do a test fitting location of laptop monitors on the lid....i dunno!We'll see.... SotosLg Posted December 7, 2022 Author Share Posted December 7, 2022 Good evening!I was supposed to update last night, but it was too late to do soYesterday, was about installing the two outlets on the case, so here we go!First, i made holes to the 1st plate, so the outlet can stick properly (with screws) and not have any further movement Next step, was to measure the dimensions for the outlet to go through the case Hole #1 done with dremel and lots of filling....sigh....thick plastic ....filling intensifies....and....the outlet goes through properly and screwed on the case! I tried to fit the male part to see how it's going to look like Plate #2 same procedure Outlet #2 with plate #2 installed with screws It was a long day yesterday....i might update later on todayIn the meantime, coffee awaits!See you later! SotosLg Posted December 7, 2022 Author Share Posted December 7, 2022 Good evening ladies and gentlemen!Almost 3 days gone by, but we were not stuck in one placeSo, here are some shots of the previous update Next thing, was to make a fan holeThe perfect spot was between the handleIt fits perfectly a 120mm fanThe agreement is to make it as much waterproof as i can, so i made the hole.... ....and attached the fan from the inner side of the caseI'll explain later why i did it that way Lights OFF! Here, i want to make a cover for the fanWhat better material to use than liquid fiberglass?I did it that way, because i wanted to create a cover, which is going to bond with the case it'selfBy the looks of it, it's not something big and extravagant, it goes on during the process! I'm going to move and cut a passage for the handle to make it's full motion An idea that i had, was to make cuts for the operator's fingers My client didn't much liked the idea, so i tried to fix itThe whole consept of the cover is to make a horizontal slice so the air can pass to the fan, plus the fan's light will be more, camouflaged!After hours of thinking how i am going to achieve such result (waterproofing and ergonomics), i decided to use tin foil to make a bendI measured the distance of the inner side of the handle, and applied some liquid fiber afterwards To make my life easier, i used normal fabric cloth cutted into little pieces Sanding the edges using a router bit....a total MESS! Next step, was to smoothen out the surface, using automotive putty (it is sanded far more quickly, but makes LOTS of dust), to make another piece of it, to put it as an exhaust cover Now, you must be wondering....why do i need the soap, right?I didn't have any vaseline or grease, so i mprovised!I used the soap to extract the copy the same way i do it if i had one of these two items! Again, fiberglass applied, cutted into little pieces, because the surface is pretty small! Extracted pretty easily! The thing is, it's not pretty reinforced just like the first one, a thin layer of fiberglass applied....i washed it down with water and let it dry.I'll reinforce it from the inner side in this one!sighThat's all for nowMore will come, i hope tomorrow!See you again guys and gals! SotosLg Posted December 9, 2022 Author Share Posted December 9, 2022 Good evening ladies and gentlemen!It's been quite a few days since i last updated!I had some setbacks with some items of the project, plus i had yesterday the Baptism of my baby son!So, let's jump into what i've done these daysFirst of all, i applied some automotive putty on the back side of the fan cover, in order to lift a bit the bottom side of it Next, to make it more durable, i applied some fiber filler While i was letting the filler to cure, i did a fan hole to the opposite side of the case, as an exhaust fan.Same procedure, but now, i removed the handle to make my life easier As an IP67 project, i had to have some usual plugs.I got two USB plugs, one HDMI and one LAN, as far as the lan goes, it can withstand up to cat6a cable You must be wondering now, what can i use these items for, right?The computer that is going to be inside, is going to be hanging from 8 corners using iron rope (i don't how else to call it)Anti-vibration, right? I measured the diameter of the plug's bolts, and it was exactly the diameter of my whole saw, with the slight difference of a one milimeter Today, i tried to make another hole for the HDMI plug, but in the middle of the process, the battery of my drill died, so i had to charge it....sighNow, here's how it's going to go....I lift a lot the endeavour, to complete it until the 15th of NovemberSo, Let's GO! SotosLg Posted December 9, 2022 Author Share Posted December 9, 2022 Good evening ladies and gentlemenI had lots of setbacks during the process which i had to overcome thoseThough, i did my best to deliver the project on time but i didn't make itLuckily, i got it back to finish it as i first thought it would beDuring the last days of the deadline, i didn't have any time at all to update the log,so, i stayed up for almost two days and nights!Back on track, and let's keep going!I had installed the plates where the ip67 plugs would be placed.I didn't measure correctly, so i had to re-place the usb3 plate a few milimeters off the original placement, so it would be in straight line with the bottom of the ethernet and HDMI plate.As i did the re-placement, there was a little space on the upper and bottom side of the plate, so i decided to smoothen it out using some automotive putty and fiberglass paste. It isn't yet completed though, because i'm a perfectionist and my OCD kicks in everytime on some aspects like this one Next, i had to install angles on the suitcase's perimeter, which they are going to be used as base for the plexiglass where the keyboard is going to be placed (more for that part in the end of the thread) As long as my OCD is in me, more measurements will occur like these ones!I had to do this, to be sure that the plexiglass will sit correctly on the angles I cutted the acrylic on the proper measurements, and here it is! Accidents like this one, shouldn't happen, but it did sadly....As i was working, the lid dissengaged from "safety" i had it to work, and fell down and broke the acrylic in three pieces....I had neither the time nor the proper envinronment to re-cut it, because it was a little over 4 am at that time, so i had to think quickly, and i finally repaired it \ Next, as help came along, we made some angles for one of the two screen, so it will sit properly on the lid.Here are both of screens placed verticalyOn the following pictures, you can see a hole in the center of the keyboard's acrylic.It is placed right in the center of it I made a screen cover out of acrylic for the screen as it was asked from the client.Moreover, i did some notches so it will be placed correctly and using no force at all Screen converters are placed that way, so they will somehow be hidden from the outter view.The screen cover though will be painted, so it will be no problem Here are some test-work for the screens to adjust the image vertically and to see how it's going to look!I couldn't use both screens simultaneously, as i have only one hdmi port on my laptop, so i did it one by one ArchAngel Michael is my protector, so i placed His icon on top as you can see!In conclusion, now, i have to re-do the keyboard's base out of wood now, because the acrylic is bending quite a lot and i couldn't insulate it as much as we wanted.I made some progress since i took it back....i made the keyboard base out of mdf sheet and i doubled the size of it to be more stable and more rigid.I glued them using liquid fiberglass....one piece out of four is plank and it didn't glue correctly due to high levels of humidity in the area (winter at last!) and its surface is quite old, so i had to re-do that part, re-inforcing it with more liquid fiberglass and re-inforced fiberglass hair, which is used only for straight constructions!That's all for now....i have to apologize for being absent and didn't post any pictures of the "after i got it back", i managed to get thought, videos too, but i'll try to post them soon enough!Thank you, and be patient, more will come very soon!
