Hello all, I have recently started a project originally posted on The Mod Zoo Forums that I'd like to enter into the Competition!

I'll be building a Fine Wood case, Made from Purple Heart!

In case you have no idea what type I'm talking about...

I'll be heading to my father's shop sometime here in the near future, Follow the thread for updates!!

A teaser of the MoboTray:

All the other pieces or being worked on still Via TurboCAD ^_^

P.S. I may or may not have a full rendering to show you all depending on if I can figure this program out!

Aww. You can't band saw it down somehow? it seems like a massive waste of material. -Specially when 1/4" might make the material prone to splitting along the grain.

It's a huge waste of material. Resawing would be the correct approach here... Such a shame to see decent lumber go to waste.

We did in fact cut them down in to 2 x 1/4" planks (they started as slightly less than 1" thick) via Table saw / Band saw, :) if I'd waste all that fine wood!! Pics:

(Unusable) These were the centers of the original 1" planks...

1/4" planks that we cut out:

One of the 1" planks we chose had some natural splitting come up after cutting, so we had to dispose of it as well... Don't worry we have more. ;)

Say hello to my dad's gut XD

interesting project you have going here

very hard wood for sure I built my monster home theatre wall unit out of purple heart

if I remember right i spent more on blades and bits than I did for the wood

what are you using for sealer?I used Tung oil

We have yet to determine, Right now we're just getting them to the right thickness and gluing them together which is difficult with an edge width of 1/4". Once that's done we're going to do a final sanding to get the entire surface down as close to 250 thousandths as we can, then give it a clear coat, After that it's off to the CNC!

Here's a pic of our shop:

Thinking of using an internal hot swap bay. Hmm...

It's going to be one beautiful case!

Wondering why mod a metal HDD cage instead of making a wood one? Just curious.

Ne0Khan, on 03 Oct 2013 - 2:14 PM, said:

Frankly I'm not totally sure that I'm going to use this one, And if I am I'm going to make sure it accents the wood in such a way, This case is going to have brass grills, feet, coolant, Etc.

I'm more or less attempting to take an easy way out of making a CAD Drawing of a custom drive bay, And doing that with 6.35mm wood and still having it relatively cool would be difficult, So this overall seems Cheaper / Easier and More Efficient.
