Guest Keir
Hi everyone,First time on here for a scratch build :), I've done two previous build on Bit-tech years ago, and have come back for a third trying to be more adventurous than my previous build. One of my main constraints was that I wanted it small enough to easily take over to a friends, but at the same time I want it powerful enough for VR, and very unique design. This is the model of the design I came up with:https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/ACtC-3fj1DJHz5Z7za__dNciHpoorVhmcY2VhG3o5WW2MaFiI5vR7BKdgJwiKfV0mcnyQ8JSQmmo-8_aCJUrUKA6LQ3xEwg1pw4REZ1ibDF4-Q13ssytVxbg1bNGRf7E19gRBWyP7FN93f0el4Jtygk-UflV=w1418-h596-no?authuser=0 https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/ACtC-3fvr2n6fZVnQ0P8DfjMtxq-QhecPlLZIz3_CLIQCBAgsy7g8vfPDP6ApSGP6RG1YICmwNNgeT3whcdZfWC1ffyVrZXrtNYPJUjGlEUc4cWp2S6m_qLbE5Yiz9bBKNRlHxIq4KeTx9G9EiGONA1uPz41=w1418-h596-no?authuser=0 The first stage I took was to make sure I obtain the heatsinks for the radiators I want to make, since this design is dependant on them. These were available at Bal-group.com, on this link: https://www.bal-group.com/heatsinks/27 , and they were happy to sell me only three: https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/ACtC-3foF2q8fKC07dPh0SHe-eeU47O3swzHcTcIonj2wyZkOKKMOiEe1bBAvavuZPZvcR3eTKMiDujWfRvtLx3NdVPWg8i2XwTRhbV51fs_z8EdzCxGtZgzFe0Sd80CekZOALXBXRCR8DZ58NtdH27PknCH=w1267-h903-no?authuser=0 https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/ACtC-3dhyexg4w7fRfRBKBG_CUuPJapaOduoV4Sv4r-NYOKTkT3HarbbkWSVWqo0F6pYb-JsMcukCO5wehLJzC1PpIx2X-jaCVfzvxSk4LpvLvLGrv-gAsIt5ELnnVDaktgR11U5m_jeVJP0DwjT879Xf8FZ=w1858-h903-no?authuser=0Unfortunately they didn't have the exact size I needed (the other sizes they sell are just them cutting this size down for a fee), so I had to cut a section of each one with a slotting saw on the milling machine:https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/ACtC-3f3RBtUhiglzEk6JrpL7HQfX6v8Mk6JYYJE5RnY6tvpx2K2eKTrGTPbgE3ZHoch7jcM_IeLZpfVqC4QxFkQ7YI02Y5wf3Tcfd5y1q2z5XaYew50vAfCjFQfy5LeGcxs31cmB96XoezwrJDRbqN32l6s=w1858-h903-no?authuser=0https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/ACtC-3fXECjMETlstiE2duQKoSoDFqeCwUXWaCvV2zG0JZeQzsriCXSBJVv76Lz4H2G8_s6OrXkXAAPb21VYlXXp5mi3nxt-81XWavCgDDcBmMCZV3OBVu8W99_mIUcXtjFgpyzr_Ln8ChkukChst9ZdoOx_=w1858-h903-no?authuser=0https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/ACtC-3cJyGYq2UA1pZEVIClipqyRnxZ3Rb-fDjoJTLUUJLCSvhv2yAi6fL2EZg44ZXEL_btUXtzRwstIw7WMJuAcrt70X7F-C7h2nK5cSIZPe4obpp2DFCixkeaRUQKGHeF9Ltv53rhJIX4MWIwdICpi0Ttw=w1858-h903-no?authuser=0As the slotting saw doesn't leave a very good finish, I then used a face mill to skim a layer off to smooth it out: https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/ACtC-3fzdsnswIwqpx4yDmmGVUO_xXX01fFy2si0SM167Zwmjr1CwWcsKmkXtXjKQetZEtMSJQylqoSrYVH5t6lEhnLKN5yaEOK63TYCmw2kX4fEh846HMOIH4SltQ-LphhubyiVvejwUme3YF_cYJwjeMPj=w1858-h903-no?authuser=0https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/ACtC-3e1MS43H1oJXbLa7jiYT6BI0g1c3S9wJWbFLdD_PfxzHBbE6wfKa9v4rY_2IP-iTk-E3OZ9Rm3C7IPcQV46JZ0cI0k1LZGG7sEN1wXTlLVefX866j_MgOvPJMaCxt0MUdEDF5YPPerPaBnapc3NGT0O=w1858-h903-no?authuser=0As the base of the heatsinks are way to thick for what I need, I then again used the face mill to thin down of the base aluminium:https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/ACtC-3eug996cmMYkeskwNlDRDEbyopC8QqAgGeIbATw6Xgvh8ELr5ADXLRrnNNGCIEyfws2cn6sg3bKPFLB1Vp-6uKHqbCanz4Nny9_6pUMHahnhHw5Kj42ug6AxH8d3ePUaVLnMb_tsqGiQ9Ecz-a3myMb=w1858-h903-no?authuser=0These are now ready for CNC to mill out the water and o-ring channels on the back:https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/ACtC-3fOqwqZvNOUZHG14_K6k1Lql0K1NXwSoeJR2wJvVsQxxTTgBmo83vQtdHYgdbGIJM3VWItungJefgJ2JpMNvXKvzM2BgDwEGaEWx7pHgLQs0-DRVL6OJ6pneevUDDwgufK_IAz7MFftTUV3HbGwCKp4=w1858-h903-no?authuser=0https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/ACtC-3dhrXI2s-WmL2W3gsSspH5_my8IplOYi3tRJccI6C6ktQLtxMSWpm4roWsh_I8lLeJAJWiKB4prw525A-liGuj60kWRootFwCx_lQFVdLW63t8-y5ZA_5hwEyA2H6HXCtnouxYZXgCKQcvIr7VkqRBx=w1858-h903-no?authuser=0https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/ACtC-3dviQpzPJDrR24EJVj01rmK_n4nRvZ_r4LajoWeNu_kF3VAfxgIw9InZdQEdprM4KXCw4UrHdnDvqJxT36cGuDQP3iuchD014AV_bHcrXWdZALeDBce0DigG9Yij5_LtDfYfG7GN7aEIXNi0Tekw37h=w1858-h903-no?authuser=0Next up was testing the casting process, since this case requires such a difficult shape, the only way I'm going to be able to make it, is by casting aluminium into a mold, then milling, grinding and sanding afterwards. In order to test the process I've started off small, by casting the water junction blocks, that feed to the two coolant pipes on each side. I 3D printed out a mold, and poured in casting silicone (after spraying on wax mold release), to create a silicone end cap for a piece of stainless tube to act as a casting flask for a special plaster mix:https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/ACtC-3e-I63QYkMDIlcb4qjteBUlK4HRTwf3FxSpygKzTd8C4Y9BT4qKexHLpbGK2a3xgdFddVjtc22RzM6GyXkDmBP9RNLRGOExis4vWY0xG-2MZYifUSrFZI9VkB0yK4UCQUHvFWpueyZrhG0dYMzFvMQH=w1858-h903-no?authuser=0https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/ACtC-3ff3W1tQpvF-PhkbNrgLrDNLKCnuh4kiGQ4xfZJy2bFjTIVvSjja26O3qennzw42jif_M1uADAT-msf77DLWOpmhNbI-gtkM1FPew4sd7Xg8E7YKbF4OxqPMlYcYVj8_dofLOMdegZC1oXyCkz78ZYl=w1858-h903-no?authuser=0https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/ACtC-3dSa8gJzQ6cp9DOskOggrG0j-bBR77QRTxsH_WD9Cr8dqxgsg2QUnzt8pOljWpB8kBiqN97fIotoEUbKXM7CvQoU2iy7Wx7Ek-raQsb4UDTPdpKR9rcS72NwOFg3g89isgaHeKY0Br5VabpskUYY3e2=w1858-h903-no?authuser=0https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/ACtC-3fRu_LmFiDAz0EyG-RxXZJNa0Z9nzgDGSuoBnopZz_NgvmbYctA3i08evLAKcMEzC5_whnF_MTDzJBQPBmSp5NtyNU_etbhfDkCFAwKHBsWW58-X9PTghGgWIoXgWbyhMV3t0SpwSBWJH5Ylf2oYfcu=w1858-h903-no?authuser=0https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/ACtC-3e8fFgFM7raW-1jNY34iruvMFQKJu96XRCbotHVTsYDSZ-z4AtIt2U0GBsoMj9EOpOfP1rM0-k1OHvpSKAbMef_6uJu4Zcwkv9uzgt1s6ZXGnYeLhyjth_Si_BNrEBE5SzGx61DqtXm1Eg2zAbRk8X_=w1858-h903-no?authuser=0The hole in the centre holds a sprue, which then holds the parts you want to cast:https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/ACtC-3doG2tp-qGkmZaTEnaoK-cPhZWWtnlqKRtRVS2WWuW193D3yCl71mBViu6D6pTi5--_Z-ZxNiPqDv2BOuK8NZ1LnYTXYBgaohK19eTd1rBSmP3GeYvqbSH74LF-EtJ7NH94Xj-U7kg_4igW7FUmTyeF=w1858-h903-no?authuser=0https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/ACtC-3cIs1kPn7ivx_jEz7VvGES-56sqEdOxS404eUzmCxfKJcJvjOmlWgYBC9hSiDB0l8aTK3XtSvUjHFJyqVzTycEnFQc3cZYpn2Z6TkIgoflzXGdw-pyk6zQS3SXrGa__N4npXX4bnBst2q2Gen5CbHNg=w1858-h903-no?authuser=0I then 3D Printed (In PLA) the parts and melted the wax sprues and the parts together:https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/ACtC-3dnaS86SS8LopWXHKJnIXJz--KzuSp-sv3_TOrt-FYcGTfXZ7EAtX8G8sYpCW36Em2Kvo8mtL7tircEPgoriZ1f1lWWCeLOFbCA9XCq1sMoeNDhGGHyJ3lYMbBg4mnUbkLdzyHXrlJwHPFNC-jMS3EY=w1858-h903-no?authuser=0https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/ACtC-3fdyv5UPHF7v4Iees7mpBXEXNSm1-B8DP5cKcreQvN7yvUGwZSb0tFbaXdP8e2fH_ajZCF87aeCPVUtU4lZJGy-xnS0is10fkTWlpfNGMI9sqQtMjo38FP9HkMAeyYix4wGr_VBufwn7WcSSSNrpsLD=w1858-h903-no?authuser=0I then also printed out a cap to hold the silicone tightly onto the bottom:https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/ACtC-3eqvkgxPHQ2_3SmAOLSftGd2MUb-LmSiH50FCK0MtmgjZGgwSj4x_yzZYxQ6K93Xuvh5ddyKZSvFH3ZkYFPfPZTOm1CuEjpx8SWBNb0zHBz41E2rt49CKIvfdhS8BUJkDw2eiWoI5pkemB7jzdaFScx=w1858-h903-no?authuser=0I then poured in the special casting plaster (Available Here: https://www.artisanfoundry.co.uk/product_info.php?products_id=98). This Plaster is a special blend for casting metal, don't use normal plaster. The Plaster itself sets in minutes, so you dont have long to mix and fill it.https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/ACtC-3f42N3qLgbWEjwSMLHjVmLt8keI31F5cFL39HtKQzkvfHhqoj5tv8-sVZZ1qTtkjQmEAT3mZfXUW9zdQrbyH7dw9vhfDlPvcDKfNuG_We5cAm75kCGKLJqJu32X8FCRPeIi70WOZOE24SwW3K6uFu5i=w1858-h903-no?authuser=0Here's the result after I peeled off the silicone:https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/ACtC-3cBLXnXTdkYQe5jzHSeGJTLfBdJ_CClY5d66bp5CFSshxVKBw5FphAwN5H2re1u-ZFEORfJK4mj9HDzHRNxWoErAzzBDDiG6NaAOcOthSRYVIA2OGTh5jVIGXb95IjXO8Nv1HHeASlFrs7_OlO-3Duu=w1858-h903-no?authuser=0To remove any air bubbles in the plaster mix, I used a homemade vacuum chamber. Its a Instant Pot pressure cooker with a 14mm Acrylic top. I also used it to create a vacuum under the plaster mold while I poured the aluminium in:https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/ACtC-3cCW7NaVo-G68xXdEVlSTBI3JlhcU_KYSWFm3cmizQ4UMhFPsh55H3s1qW5YPYMOPsShukKJKgPSi_vwddq4PamAe6m1ggkxYSNFs9nvB72EmnQI7mUo5tjf0ba2CgA9ZQrtIaF7ZyCBRpGSmMy8g4v=w1858-h903-no?authuser=0To create the silicone ring on top that the mold sits on, I printed out a mold and pasted in some silicone sealant:https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/ACtC-3f1zBUyGifT6y8Aat71QRGbrphkmH5xhIRFsZDwdSDcYoF0c6PitI3cAYA64ImcpEaIemYfrlNq0I19MV53hd2NZ2ZjcqR6pR1Mabom_9k85zd4gnhpe_lljoVw2xGFxCTcFpr7THZXhzRbs7ex-dyA=w1858-h903-no?authuser=
